The Santa Cruz Mountains have been our exercise an The Santa Cruz Mountains have been our exercise and mental health refuge all summer. Local hikes have provided a perfect socially distanced escape. We immersed ourselves in nature and emerged rejuvenated. We are heartbroken that the CZU Lighting Complex wildfires have devastated so many lives and so much beauty. Please pray with us for the people who have lost homes, for those who have been evacuated, for those who are bravely fighting the lighting-strike fires in Northern California.

Here are a few of our favorite memories. You can see blog posts and more photos in the profile link. 1) Henry Cowell Redwoods, 2) Big Basin Redwoods, 3) Russian Ridge Open Space, 4) Monte Bello Open Space Preserve, 5) Pescadero Creek Park.

*** Please note that all of these parks are in the evacuation zone and are not safe to enter right now.

We particularly enjoyed this creepy Tafoni sandstone formation at El Corte de Madera Creek Preserve during a recent walk in those woods. Details are in our latest blog post and the link is in my profile.

No crowds, just a vast blue sky, waterfalls, lakes, grassy hillsides as far as the eye can see, and as much solitude as you want to have. The lodge itself is at the end of 45 miles of teeth rattling gravel road through nothing but ranch lands, so the seclusion is not surprising. We took this hike in March and we’re just getting around to posting, because, well, slacking. Check out my profile link for the full story on our blog.

Hiked today to the three towers in #TorresDelPaine Hiked today to the three towers in #TorresDelPaine national park in #Patagonia, #Chile. It seems easy enough at a net 2800 ft elevation gain over 6 miles (one way). Except that you start at the Rio Ascencio river and go half way up and have to hike all the way back down to the river and back up 2800 ft. Then you have to go up and down again on the way back 😫. My Fitbit logged 4100 ft total elevation over 14 miles. The view and experience are absolutely worth the joint pain, but be aware you have a tough day before you start. Our exceptional guides at @WildernessTravel knew just when to start to avoid the crowds as the right pace for success.

Seriously, this is a really fun day trip, with a couple of different ferry options. We launched from #Tiburon, which gave us coffee/pancake options in the morning and happy hour options on our return. This photo is from one of the abandoned military bases on the island. We blogged about it, so you can check out CoastsideSlacking.com if you are curious.
